What We Do

With the help of our donors, the Foundation has supported youth-focused sailing programs and individual young sailors for more than 40 years. Some of our most recent efforts include:

Scholarships and Other Financial Support

The Foundation is committed to ensuring that no young person who wants to learn to sail will be denied for want of funding. Scholarships are available to cover the costs of local programs.

The Foundation is also committed to ensuring that young sailors who want to compete in distant events can apply for stipends to cover entry fees, travel costs, and related expenses.

High Performance Sailing

The Foundation recently provided funding for the launch of the Monterey Bay Youth Sailing High Performance Program. Under the direction of Bruce Edwards, this program is focused on the 29er Skiff and the C420s. It is designed to give local youth access to a level of sailing that would otherwise be out of reach.

Flying Junior Sailboats

The Foundation purchased two new FJs to replace boats in MPYC’s fleet that had reached the end of their useful life.

Tera Sport Sailboats

The Foundation purchased nine used Tera Sport sailboats from a Bay Area yacht club and donated them to the youth sailing programs at MPYC and Stillwater Yacht Club.

Optimist Dinghies

The Foundation purchased six Optimist Dinghies for MPYC’s Junior Sailing Program. This brings the Development Fleet to a total of fourteen boats, an ideal number for the current program.

Along with the dinghies, the Foundation provided racks to conveniently store the boats on the floats adjacent to the yacht club.

Instructor Training

MPYSF recently hosted a US Sailing Level 1 instructor training course for a group of nine aspiring instructors.

Taught over a period of three days, the course focused on instructional skills and a curriculum for beginning sailors.

Instruction was in the classroom, on the dock, and on the water.

Students learned to conduct chalk-talks, land drills, and on-the-water exercises.
